Beaver education is at the heart of our mission. We are dedicated to helping individuals and communities better understand the vital role beavers play in maintaining healthy ecosystems. Through hands-on learning, guided tours, and real-world observation, we aim to raise awareness about how beavers support biodiversity, improve water quality, and naturally restore habitats. By educating the public, we hope to foster a deeper appreciation for these remarkable animals and encourage responsible coexistence with wildlife.
Charlie was once just a normal fisherman, like everyone else. But then, over the course of four consecutive days, something unusual happened—the same beaver surfaced each time, lifting its head above the water and staring directly at him. That moment changed everything.
Now, Charlie’s life revolves around that encounter. He turns in early each night so he can rise with the day and follow the family of beavers he’s come to know along the Delaware Raritan Canal. What began as curiosity has grown into a deep passion and purpose.
Today, Charlie is driven by a mission: to inspire others to experience these remarkable animals for themselves and to understand their vital role in shaping the landscape of Mercer County, New Jersey.
Every Saturday, Charlie leads small, guided groups on unique excursions, taking them off the beaten path to discover hidden beaver dams, lodges, and ponds. With years of hands-on experience tracking beavers throughout the watershed, he brings both knowledge and enthusiasm to every outing. His goal is simple—to educate, to connect people with nature, and to share the incredible story of the beaver’s return.

As soon as Europeans arrived here in the New World, beaver furs quickly became a sought-after resource. Trading for beaver furs were the first successful transactions Europeans had with the Native Americans.
This year, we are celebrating 250 years as a country. The history of the fur trade and its significance in the start of this nation has not been properly exemplified. Our country was literally first explored, settled, and started by frontiersmen in canoes searching for beaver. These were men who were totally willing to confront any danger that might be in their way.
The primary objective of the New Jersey Beaver Project is to create a comprehensive beaver map of Mercer County. This map will be developed using traditional, hands-on methods—much like the early frontiersmen did—relying not on modern technology such as satellites or GPS, but on direct exploration by canoe, walking along creek beds, and tracking beaver through observation in the field.
